CORE TEAM GEORGE H.O. ABUNGU, Phd – Founding Director and Lead Consultant Dr Abungu is a Cambridge-trained
archaeologist and former
Director-General of the National Museums of Kenya. He is the founder
Chairman of Africa 2009, ISCOTIA
(the International Standing Committee
on the Traffic in Illicit Antiquities), and CHDA, the Centre for
Heritage Development in Africa (ex-PMDA), among others. Dr. Abungu is a
visiting lecturer at a number of universities, including Gothenburg
University, in Sweden, and the University of the Western Cape in South
Africa. In addition to his work in the conservation of African
heritage, he has over 60 publications in the disciplines of
archaeology, heritage management, and museology, as well as on the
subject of culture and development. Dr Abungu is an advisor to the
Aluka
project of the Mellon Foundation, and to the Global Heritage
Fund. He is a member of the ICOM
Executive Council and Board member for TARA, the Trust for
African Rock Art, among others. Dr Abungu currently
sits on the World Monuments Watch panel.
He is Kenya’s Representative
to the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee, and recently elected
